UK Photographers are victims of copyright breaches

March 10th, 2009 · No Comments

Interesting article on www.1854.eu commenting on a survey by the British Photographic Council. It appears that nearly three quarters of British photographers surveyed had been the victims of copyright infringement and felt that there was no point in taking action against the infringer as it would be pointless and not cost effective.

Surely there must be a better way for copyright owners to feel that the law is there to protect them. Clearly there is very little purpose in laws that are readily broken with no concern over the consequences. Copyright law should protect the creators of work in the same way as anyone else would expect to be remunerated for their efforts.

We have to say that our experience of the situation in the UK is a general lack of understanding and professionalism when it comes to the whole area of copyright. Copyright owners appear very laid back when dealing with their work. We actively encourage our clients to protect their work formally and to take action wherever necessary to protect their work. Such protection only increases the value of the work and may convince others of its worth.
